افتراضي Takaful windows promote market growth

Takaful windows promote market growth
2009-07-29
Takaful windows in conventional insurance companies could encourage new players to enter the Takaful market, experts claim.

A Takaful window is in operation when an insurance company that does not have a separate legal entity for the sale of Islamic products offers Shariah-compliant insurance products.

Recently, Takaful windows have been criticised based on the belief that window operators may end up doing things that are not permissible as a result of a lack of experience and proper guidance.

Others still claim that Takaful windows confuse customers and demonstrate a lack of commitment by insurers to Islamic products, thereby posing a threat to Takaful operators.

On the other hand, some experts feel that Takaful windows create notable advantages.

“Such windows are essential for the growth of the industry. Window operations are financially stronger than a new Takaful start-up because it has other sources of income," said Peter Hodgins, Partner, Insurance/Islamic Insurance, Clyde & Co.

"There is an argument that there would be people going to conventional insurance companies and not using the Takaful window. But that does not mean that we get rid of the concept. I do not see any harm when we see Islamic products being offered in conventional banks. I can't understand why insurance firms cannot do the same."

He further stated that windows could encourage new players to enter the Takaful market.

According to a Swiss report, the Takaful sector grew at an annual average of 25 percent between 2004 and 2007, whilst the rest of the insurance industry grew at just over 10 percent during the same period.

Whilst the sector is expanding fast, along with the Islamic banking and finance industry as a whole, Islamic bank assets still only make up a small portion of the global figure.

“Takaful penetration is still marginal,” said Mr Abouzaid, chief executive of Takaful Re in Dubai. “It is still very small but definitely we are contributing to increase the penetration.”
