Abstract:
We investigate the possible impacts of Islamic finance on the risk and stability of Islamic commercial banks. We consider a sample of 456 conventional and Islamic banks from 22 countries for the period of 2001 till 2008. Our results show that the operational risks and limitation associated with Islamic banking do not actually affect the risk and stability of Islamic banks. By controlling for various factors we show that such banks appear to be as stable as conventional banks. Furthermore, Loan risk of large Islamic banks is not significantly different from that of large conventional banks. Small Islamic banks, however, have a lower exposure to credit risk than conventional banks of the same size. New evidence pointing towards partial deviation of Islamic banks from the Islamic finance principles is also found.
